The quickly rising Michigan football program has already reached No. 1 in at least one category: coach’s salary.

Making just over $9 million annually, Jim Harbaugh now ranks as the highest paid head man in the nation, according to a USA Today survey.

That vaults the former quarterback well past last year’s top earner, Nick Saban of Alabama, who falls to second at $6.9 million.

Urban Meyer of Ohio State, Bob Stoops of Oklahoma and Jimbo Fisher of Florida State complete the Top 5 with salaries in the $5.2-million-to-$6-million range.

The Southeastern Conference paid the highest median salary at about $4.2 million; the Pac-12 ranked third at $3.1 million.

Harbaugh’s compensation reportedly includes a $2-million interest-free loan and another to be received if he remains as head coach — a very strong possibility — in December.

UCLA’s Jim Mora ranks 27th at $3.45 million. USC has not released details of Clay Helton’s contract, which is reportedly in the $3-million range.

Notre Dame is paying Brian Kelly $1.6 million a year, which ranks him at 65th in the nation.

The coach with the lowest reported annual salary? That would be Doug Martin of New Mexico State at $376,044.
