Kings chasing records in playoff run

With every playoff game the Kings win, it seems like they match or set a team record.

Which could mean one of two things: They’re having a great playoff run, or they haven’t had much playoff success in the past.

It’s probably a little of both.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES (PLAYOFFS):

--Dustin Brown has three game-winning goals, tying a Kings record set by Wayne Gretzky in 1993.

--Brown is tied with Gretzky, Jari Kurri and Dave Taylor for the most short-handed goals in Kings playoff history (2).

--Brown tied an NHL record with two short-handed goals in Game 2 of the Western Conference quarterfinals at Vancouver.

--Jonathan Quick has three career playoff shutouts, tying a Kings record set by Felix Potvin. Quick has two shutouts this playoff year, tying a Kings record set by Potvin in 2001.

--Quick set a Kings playoff record for most saves in a period when he stopped 22 of 23 shots in the third period of Game 2 of the Western Conference quarterfinals at Vancouver.

--Quick holds the Kings’ all-time playoff record in save percentage (.922).

--Jeff Carter’s hat trick in Game 2 of the Western Conference final at Phoenix was the 10th playoff hat trick in Kings history. The last was by Gretzky on May 29, 1993.

--Mike Richards became the second King to record a “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” -- a goal, an assist and a fight -- in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals against St. Louis. The first was Marcel Dionne in 1981.

--Matt Greene became the second Kings defenseman to score a short-handed goal, in Game 1 of the West semifinals at St. Louis. The first was Rob Blake in 1993.

--Anze Kopitar and Willie Mitchell are both a career +9 defensively with the Kings in the playoffs, tied for the best in club history.

TEAM NOTES (PLAYOFFS):

The Kings have ...

--Reached the third round for the second time in team history. The first was 1993.

--Scored four short-handed goals, two short of the team record set in 1993.

--Won a club-record seven straight games (April 22 – May 15).

--Become only the fifth team since 1980 to win 10 of its first 11 playoff games. The others: Pittsburgh in 2008, Detroit in 1995, Edmonton in 1988 and Edmonton in 1983.

--Won their first seven road games this playoff year. That ties the NHL record for consecutive road playoff wins in one playoff year, last done by Chicago in 2010. The last team to win its first seven road playoff games was Colorado in 1999.

--Won a club-record nine straight road playoff games dating back to last season. That ties the NHL record for consecutive road playoff wins spanning more than one year), set by the New York Islanders in 1982 and 1983.

AND THERE’S MORE

--The Kings’ sweep of St. Louis in the West semifinals was the first in club history in a seven-game series.

--They’re only the third No. 8-seeded team to advance past the second round. Edmonton did it in 2006, and Montreal did it in 2010.

--They’re the first No. 8-seeded team to eliminate both a No. 1 and No. 2 seed.

--The last team to go through the first two rounds in nine games was Pittsburgh in 2008.

--The Kings are the 10th team to eliminate a No. 1-seeded team in the first round under the current format. They’re also the sixth team to eliminate a Presidents’ Trophy team in the first round.
