Watch Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner’s epic staredown with umpire Joe West

They don't call him "Cowboy Joe" for nothing.

Longtime MLB umpire Joe West and San Francisco Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner got into an intense staring contest Thursday night, with both men looking like they were taking part in a showdown back in the wild, wild West.

Things were already chippy between the two of them after Bumgarner struck out on a called pitch in the second inning against San Diego and had something to say to West about it on his way back to the dugout.

Then in the sixth inning, Bumgarner got fed up with the way West was calling his pitches and yelled out an expletive after walking Jedd Gyorko.

West immediately took off his mask, and this is what followed:

The two of them barely blinked or moved a muscle for nearly 20 seconds before backing off at roughly the same time.

After the Giants lost to the Padres, 5-4, Bumgarner pretended he had no idea that the country music-singing West had been working the game.

“Joe was behind the plate?” Bumgarner said. “I don’t pay attention to the umpires. I didn’t even realize he was back there.”
