Michael Phelps vows no alcohol until after Olympics, at least

Michael Phelps, relegated to a second-tier swim meet this week because of multiple drunk-driving arrests, has vowed to steer clear of alcohol -- at least until after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

After his second DUI last fall, U.S. officials excluded him from the squad competing at the world championships in Russia. Instead, he has entered a national meet in San Antonio.

“Before I even went to court, I said to myself that I’m not going to drink until after Rio -- if I ever drink again,” he told the Associated Press. “That was a decision I made for myself.”

Meanwhile, in Kazan, Russia, Katie Ledecky continued her dominant performance with a gold medal in the 200-meter freestyle.

Federica Pellegrini, the world-record holder from Italy, finished second and American Missy Franklin was third.

Ledecky set a world record in winning the 1,500-meter freestyle on Tuesday. The rest of the U.S. team has not fared as well and could be headed for its lowest medal count in more than a decade.
