The Tennessee Titans have fired Ken Whisenhunt as coach after a 1-6 start.

Assistant coach Mike Mularkey was named interim coach, replacing Whisenhunt, who was 3-20 in 1 1/2 seasons and has about 2 1/2 years left on his contract.

“We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction,” Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a written statement Tuesday. “I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward.”

The Titans are trying to rebuild with No. 2 draft pick Marcus Mariota at quarterback. They are coming off a 20-6 loss to Houston on Sunday.

Whisenhunt, who guided Arizona to the Super Bowl at the end of the 2008 season, is 4-31 in his last 35 games as a head coach.
