There are some things you kind of assumed this defense would have learned by the middle of October. One of those things is gap assignments, which continue to be a topic of discussion after every subpar performance from this defensive unit. For a deeper look at this, and for some good quotes from Jeff Ulbrich, check out this post from yesterday.

To go along with some quotes from Wednesday’s practice, we’ve also got a post on the wider splits of the offensive line, plus a feature on Brett Hundley returning for his senior season and a notebook featuring California quarterback Jared Goff, both written by Chris Foster.

On the packages for Myles Jack: “In retrospect, you always look back and say, ‘Maybe I should have used it more or less.’ But I do that with a lot of plays after a game.”

On the play in which defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes goes in at running back: “Just so you know, that play is called Panda. They call Eddie the Kung-Fu Panda. That’s the Panda play.”

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich

On the evolution and struggles of his defense: “There’s always a little bit of trying to find some answers for your guys. I don’t have the type of ego where it’s just going to be my way and we’re going to do it this way the entire time. We’re continually evolving and just trying to put the best product out there that we can. If that means we have to put a few more wrinkles in, that’s what we have to do, for sure. We’re working on that.”
