USC notes: Javorius Allen’s 100-yards-rushing streak ends against Cal

USC tailback Javorius Allen’s streak of 100-yard rushing games ended Thursday night in USC’s 38-30 victory over California at the Coliseum.

Allen rushed for 60 yards in 21 carries.

Allen had 27 yards in 11 carries in the first half and 31 yards by the end of the third quarter.

Allen rushed for 114 yards in 19 carries against Washington State on Nov. 1 to become the first USC player since Marcus Allen to rush for more than 100 yards in six consecutive games.

“I’m not disappointed,” Javorius Allen said of the streak ending. “It’s just part of football.”

Allen has rushed for 1,184 yards this season.

Kessler flagged

USC quarterback Cody Kessler completed 31 of 42 passes for 371 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception.

The junior also drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for taunting players on the Cal sideline after delivering a 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end Randall Telfer early in the fourth quarter.

“I didn’t say a word,” Kessler said. “I didn’t even point.”

Kessler has passed for 29 touchdowns, with three interceptions.

Turn of fortune

Sophomore running back Justin Davis went from feeling low to feeling good in less than two minutes during the first quarter.

After Cal quarterback Jared Goff’s pooch punt was downed at the one-yard line, Davis was tackled in the end zone for a safety that pulled the Golden Bears to within 14-2.

But when USC got the ball back, the Trojans moved down the field on a 36-yard pass from Kessler to Nelson Agholor that was coupled with a roughing-the-passer penalty against Cal.

Two plays later, Davis scored on a four-yard run.

It was Davis’ third touchdown of the season.

Cravens returns

Linebacker Su’a Cravens showed no ill effects from the knee sprain he suffered at Washington State.

Cravens sacked Goff for an eight-yard loss in the second quarter. He also batted away a pass in the third quarter.

He finished with 10 tackles.

Cravens has 13 1/2 tackles for losses, including five sacks.

Lineman Leonard Williams had 1 1/2 sacks and linebacker Scott Felix also had one for the Trojans.

Jackson plays offense

For the first time in six games, Adoree’ Jackson played on offense.

The starting cornerback had not played both ways since the Trojans’ Sept. 27 victory over Oregon State.

Jackson had two receptions for 17 yards against Cal.

Farmer makes impact

Receiver George Farmer is becoming a bigger part of the offense.

The junior caught two passes for 40 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown from Kessler that gave the Trojans a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

It wasn’t all good news though: Farmer was called for holding in the third quarter, nullifying an apparent 88-yard touchdown by Agholor.
