Manhattan Beach Mira Costa put itself on the baseball map on Friday night, winning the South Division of the Boras Classic by knocking off the No. 1 team in Southern California, JSerra, 2-1, behind a terrific pitching performance from unsung senior Roland Houseman.

Houseman came into the championship game having thrown 3 1/3 innings all season for the Mustangs. But given the opportunity to show what he could do, Houseman threw strike after strike. He pitched into the seventh inning before ace Trevor Franklin took over with a runner on first and none out and earned the save.

Houseman gave up four hits, struck out five and walked one. Matt Beserra put Mira Costa (11-1) on top, 1-0, with a home run in the second. Zack Chan upped the lead to 2-0 in the fifth with an RBI single. JSerra (10-2) got a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Matt Manskar that got lost in the lights at Mater Dei.
