Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei wins Fairfax tournament championship

It has been a very good summer for Santa Ana Mater Dei.

With basketball wins over Sierra Canyon, Chino Hills, Santa Margarita and Long Beach Poly, the Monarchs are letting everyone know they intend to be part of the debate over who’s the top team in the Southland next season.

On Saturday night, Mater Dei cruised to an 81-52 victory over Poly in the championship game of the Fairfax tournament. Spencer Freedman finished with 25 points.

In the third-place game, Jalen Hill had 40 points in Corona Centennial’s 78-68 win over Santa Margarita. Jordan Guest led the Eagles with 19 points and Jake Kyman had 16.

One of the best games of the day was Chino Hills defeating Crespi, 83-77. Eli Scott scored 38 points and LaMelo Ball had 22 points for the Huskies, who also received 13 rebound from Onyeka Okongwu. Brandon Williams scored 21 points and Taj Regans 20 for Crespi.

Kirk Smith and Jamal Hartwell each scored 22 points to help Fairfax win the consolation title with a 73-63 win over Loyola.

Redondo defeated Brentwood, 58-43. Jailen Moore scored 16 points. La Canada defeated Alemany, 53-44. Justin Kouyoumdjian had 18 points. Santa Monica defeated Orange Lutheran, 54-47. Rip Economou finished with 17 points. Calabasas defeated Maranatha, 64-45. Blake Fisher had 20 points.
