Boys’ basketball: Oak Park prepares for Sierra Canyon showdown

Oak Park has aspirations of being an Open Division team in the Southern Section this season, so having the opportunity to take on No. 1-ranked Sierra Canyon on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Sierra Canyon is going to be a great test.

The Eagles (6-2) own a win over Long Beach Poly and tuned up by beating San Gabriel Academy, 84-55, on Thursday night. Riley Battin scored 28 points in three quarters. Important for the Eagles will be 6-11 junior Ezekiel Richards, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds. He’ll be mixing it up with Sierra Canyon’s 6-11 Marvin Bagley III.

“We have to defend and rebound,” Coach Aaron Shaw said.

Sierra Canyon (2-0) enjoyed a dunkathon in a 93-46 win over Hollywood. Bagley scored 24 points. Crespi defeated Campbell Hall, 58-53. Billy Oxley and Kyle Owens each had 17 points.

Jaime Jaquez scored 38 points to rally Camarillo to a 76-66 overtime victory over Calabasas. Golden Valley defeated Chaminade, 80-79, in overtime. K.J. Martin had 22 points for Chaminade.

Heritage Christian (9-0) won its own tournament championship with a 64-58 win over Hart. Juhwan Hrris-Dyson scored 25 points. Renz Brual had 22 points for Hart.

St. Francis defeated Hawthorne, 71-30, to advance to the championship game of the El Segundo tournament against Palos Verdes. Joey Walsh scored 27 points.

Viewpoint defeated Malibu, 64-38. Freshman Andrew Reyes had 12 points. Burroughs defeated Simi Valley, 67-59. Tristan Hull scored 28 points. Max Edwards had 16 points for Simi Valley.

In the University tournament, University will play Western League rival Palisades in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. final. University (7-0) defeated Los Angeles, 78-41. Rashon Crutcher led the way with 19 points. Palisades defeated View Park, 68-57. Banning defeated Valley Academy, 57-56.

Brentwood defeated St. Monica, 65-40. Braelee Albert had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Serra defeated Venice, 64-47.

Birmingham defeated Taft, 87-61, in the Beverly Hills tournament. Devonaire Doutrive scored 30 points, Devante Doutrive had 21 points and Deschon Winston added 14 points and 12 rebounds. Mark Boland had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Friday’s Beverly Hills tournament schedule: Hamilton vs. St. Monica, 2 p.m.; Serra vs. Brentwood, 3:30 p.m.; Loyola vs. Beverly Hills, 5 p.m.; Washington vs. El Camino Real, 6:30 p.m.; Santa Monica vs. Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 8 p.m.

Granada Hills defeated Canyon, 56-54. Luke Alviar had 16 points.

Jarod Lucas scored 32 points in Los Altos’ 98-55 win over Gardena.
