Boys’ basketball: Westchester, led by 6-7 Keith Fisher, is ready to earn respect for City Section

City Section teams are off to good starts. Crenshaw is 2-0 in the El Monte tournament. Dorsey knocked off Windward. Fairfax and Taft are preparing to begin their seasons next week. But the team to watch is Westchester (2-0).

The Comets, led by 6-foot-7 San Jose State-bound Keith Fisher, earned a spot in the semifinals of the Redondo tournament with a 72-54 rout of Compton on Wednesday. Fisher scored 23 points and was seven of seven from the free-throw line.

It was career win No. 798 for Westchester Coach Ed Azzam, who’s closing in on Willie West’s City Section record of 803.

The Comets have lots of big bodies in the middle, and their depth was too much for Compton (1-1), which received 21 points from Raysean Scott.

“I felt in the second half, we did a good job playng defense and containing their top players,” Fisher said. “I love playing with this team. I think we can do big things.”

Westchester will face Redondo in Friday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal. After trailing by two points at halftime, the Sea Hawks outscored Oak Park, 20-6, in the third quarter en route to an 86-60 victory. Cameron Williams scored 19 points for Redondo (2-0), one of six players in double figures. Sophomore Riley Battin scored 15 points until fouling out late in the third quarter for Oak Park (1-1) when he picked up an offensive foul, followed by a technical.

Eastvale Roosevelt received 23 points from junior guard Jemarl Baker to defeat Peninsula, 57-42. Roosevelt will face Long Beach Poly on Friday at 8 p.m. Poly defeated Inglewood, 62-59. Zafir Williams scored 23 points and Drew Buggs 21.

In the consolation bracket, El Camino Real got a late basket from Brandon Russell to defeat Lynwood, 53-51. Russell finished with 22 points. Joe Tate scored 24 points for Lynwood.

Hart defeated Campbell Hall, 62-56, in overtime. Preston Dominguez had 17 points. Jordan Cohen led Campbell Hall with 23 points and five assists. Mike Meadows, who finished with 18 points, made a three at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.

Rancho Christian defeated Mayfair, 53-43. Freshman Isaiah Mobley had 14 points. Crespi defeated Narbonne, 52-42. De’Anthony Melton had 17 points and 14 rebounds.
