Football: CIF State Bowl games to be held at Sacramento State

The California Interscholastic Federation announced Friday that Sacramento State will serve as the main host for the CIF state football championship bowl games from 2015 through 2017. The games have been played at StubHub Center in Carson since the bowls started in 2006.

The new venue means less travel for Northern California teams. Hornet Stadium has a seating capacity of 21,195.

“The CIF is pleased to bring the bowl games to Sacramento State,” CIF Executive Director Roger Blake said. “We are excited to be holding this event at a facility which has hosted events such as the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships and will allow for a memorable experience for our student-athletes.”

Pending the approval of the proposed revision for CIF regional and state championships, which would increase the number of bowl games from five to eight, Hornet Stadium would serve as the main host site with the use of other venues possible.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome the best high school football teams in California to Sacramento,” said Mike Sophia, director of the Sacramento Sports Commission. “The CIF is a tremendous organization and a great partner and we are committed to providing a true championship experience for the student-athletes, coaches and fans.”
