Football: California Showcase brought out 484 prospects

The California Showcase held last weekend at the Great Park in Irvine brought out 484 high school seniors to work out in front of representatives from 47 colleges and universities from 23 states seeking players for NCAA Division II, III and NAIA football.

Former UCLA Coach Terry Donahue, who coordinates the event, said he expects lots of participants to be awarded financial aid packages.

Participants had to have at least a 2.5 grade-point average and SAT score of 860 or higher.

One of the most impressive athletes to attract the attention of recruiters was Gary Reece-Scott, a cornerback from Hesperia who ran the fastest 40-yard time (4.38 seconds). Reece-Scott said afterward, several schools made offers.

Also running fast times were defensive back Armstrong Mephors (JW North) at 4.40, receiver Devery Jones (Corona Centennial) at 4.44 and running back Sheldon Arnold (Santee) at 4.50.
