There’s signs of a resurgence at Woodland Hills Taft, once a perennial City Section football title contender.

The Toreadors improved to 5-1 and knocked off unbeaten Chatsworth, 49-14, in a West Valley League opener on Friday night.

Quarterback Chris Duncan was 22 of 29 for 341 yards and six touchdowns.

Deron Braswell, in his third year as coach, has the Toreadors in ideal position. They’re making weekly improvement and appear on a collision course to meet Birmingham on Oct. 23 for the league title.

In a Western League opener, Venice showed that it’s not ready to give up the title hunt without a battle. The Gondoliers defeated Palisades, 42-13. Palisades hasn’t beaten Venice since 2000. Chris Dormer and Dejean Parramore each had two touchdowns. Skye Germaine returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown.

In the Marine League, Banning is relevant again. The Pilots defeated San Pedro, 10-9, in their league opener as kicker Santiago Cardenas made a 42-yard field goal with one second left.

In the Coliseum League, the addtion of Los Angeles and Hawkins is creating new intrigue. Los Angeles is 6-0 after stunning Crenshaw, 28-26. Justin Rogers caught two touchdown passes and Los Angeles stopped Crenshaw on a two-point conversion attempt with just over two minutes left. Hawkins is 6-0 after a 42-0 win over Manual Arts.

In the Central League, Belmont improved to 7-0 with a 41-0 win over Legacy. Hollywood is 7-0 after a 40-0 win over Contreras. Belmont is at Hollywood on Oct. 30.
