Football: Loyola’s new QB is forced to wear No. 99
Loyola promoted quarterback Sean O’Malley from the sophomore team to starting quarterback this past week, and he responded with 194 yards passing against Alemany. But people in the stands were wondering what in the name of tradition was he wearing No. 99? Quarterbacks don’t wear numbers in the 90s.
Loyola has a rule that numbers in the 90s are reserved only for sophomores, so O’Malley didn’t have much choice. Even sophomore running back Drake Beasley is stuck wearing No. 94.
First choice for numbers goes to the seniors. Then come the juniors.
Of course, the word is some players have been willing to turn over their favorite number for a price.
“I think there’s money exchanges,” Coach Marvin Sanders said.
As in a couple of free lunches.
O’Malley wore No. 15 on the sophomore team, so he’s going to be stuck with No. 99 for the rest of this season unless he’s got some extra change in his wallet.
