Football: Parents don’t like sons to be backups, but look what happens with patience

Sophomore QB fills in at Edison

This weekend is a good example of why backup quarterbacks are so important and must be ready to deliver when called upon.

Anaheim Servite pulled out a 39-38 win over JSerra behind backup Aaron Simpson. Filling in for the injured Tyler Lytle, Simpson scored on a 22-yard touchdown run with six seconds left, then completed a pass to Ryan Melvin for the two-point conversion, gaining a critical Trinity League victory.

Tesoro held out starter Devon Modster (injured shoulder) for its South Coast League game against El Toro, fell behind, then rallied behind backup Carter Jaenichen to pull out a 31-28 victory.

Huntington Beach Edison lost starter Grant Lowary in the first quarter to a shoulder injury on Thursday night in its Sunset League opener against Los Alamitos, but sophomore Griffin O’Connor came off the bench to rally the Chargers to a 17-14 win.

Dymond Lee, who has shared quarterback duties with Tommy Costello, took Chaminade on a 96-yard game-winning drive to stun unbeaten Alemany, 43-40, with eight seconds left.

Then there’s the former backup, Quentin Davis of St. John Bosco. He used to be on the bench behind Josh Rosen. Now he’s the starter. He completed 14 of 18 passes for 386 yards and four touchdowns in a 62-14 win over Santa Margarita.

Yes, parents don’t like their sons being backups, but a little patience can lead to opportunity.
