Texas A&M edges Virginia Tech to advance to Wooden Legacy title game

DJ Hogg scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half to lead Texas A&M to a 68-65 win over Virginia Tech in a Wooden Legacy semifinal on Friday at Cal State Fullerton.

Texas A&M (4-1) will play in the tournament championship while Virginia Tech (4-1) plays in the third-place game. Both games are Sunday in Anaheim. Hogg also grabbed 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, and scored the final five points for the Aggies.

Ahmed Hill had 18 points for Virginia Tech. Justin Robinson missed his first four shots but made his final two attempts of the first half and finished with 14 points.

Seven players scored for Virginia Tech in the first half as it ran out to a 38-25 halftime lead. The Aggies made eight consecutive shots to pull to within three points, 57-54, and later cut the lead to two, 63-61, on a layup by Admon Gilder.

New Mexico 105, Cal State Northridge 89: Elijah Brown and Tim Williams scored 21 points apiece to lead Lobos to the victory. New Mexico (4-1) scored a tournament-record 105 points. The Lobos will play the winner of the Dayton in the fifth-place game, while Cal State Northridge (2-4) faces the Portland in the seventh-place game. Both games are Sunday in Anaheim.

Brown made seven of 11 shots and added seven assists. Williams was seven of 12 from the field and made all seven of his free throws.

Darin Johnson scored 22 points to lead the Matadors. Aaron Parks added 20 points. The Matadors pulled to within two points, 75-73, on a shot inside by Rakim Lubin, but New Mexico pulled away in the final six minutes. Sam Logwood had two impressive dunks in the final minutes for the Lobos.

Dayton 84, Portland 74: Charles Cooke scored 20 points and Scoochie Smith added 17 as the Flyers cruised to the win. Five players scored in double figures for Dayton (3-2). The Flyers scored inside the paint early and often and shot the ball well from long range, making 10 of 22 three-pointers.

Alex Wintering scored a game-high 31 points — including 15 from the free-throw line — and added eight assists but also had eight turnovers for Portland (3-2).

Men

Florida Gulf Coast 68, Long Beach State 67 (OT): Christian Terrell made a layup with 2.4 seconds to play to give the Eagles the lead, as the 49ers (1-7) blew a five-point edge in overtime and fell to 0-6 on the road.

Jacksonville State 61, Cal State Fullerton 38: The Titans (2-3) shot only 25.6% from the field overall and scored 14 points in the second half in the Global Sports Classic at Las Vegas to lose their third straight game.

UC Irvine 63, South Dakota State 52: Jaron Martin had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Eyassu Worku had 15 points as the Anteaters (3-2) defeated the Jackrabbits in the Sanford Pentagon Showcase at Sioux Falls, S.D.

at Utah 85, UC Riverside 67: Lorenzo Bonam scored a career-high 21 points and Kyle Kuzma added 18 to help the Utes stay unbeaten at 4-0. The Highlanders (1-3) got 17 points from Chance Murray and 15 from Dikymbe Martin.

at Loyola Marymount 78, Portland State 62: After trailing by a point at the half, the Lions (2-2) pulled away in the final 10 minutes, shooting 57.4% overall from the field. Brandon Brown scored 20 points, making eight of 12 shots.

Women

No. 9 UCLA 75, Toledo 73: Jordin Canada scored 27 points, Monique Billings had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and the Bruins (5-1) held on in the Cancun Challenge. Canada scored UCLA’s final 11 points in the first half.
