The itchy shrub’s 32nd annual festival on Sept. 27 will feature competitive floral arrangements — all of which include poison oak — and prizes for winners in 10 other categories, including largest leaf, biggest branch, best rash (photograph or in person) and best recipe. It was devised more than 30 years ago as a sport Brits could win, but hopes were dashed when a Canadian won the first contest. Nonetheless, the British persevere. Contestants lie on their backs and put sole to sole and toe to toe. The goal is a “toe-down” within the confines of two mini-walls at the sides of the wrestling feet.
