U river cruises aimed at millennials drops age limit. Yes, baby boomers, you can go

Share

U by Uniworld last year positioned itself as a European river cruise brand aimed at millennials who want more time in port to go clubbing, dining and touring. Now U says its sailings are open to all, not just the 21- to 45-year-old crowd.

“Originally, U was very specific in defining its target market but has learned that the experience is less about a number and more about attracting a new generation of adult travelers to river cruising,” Ellen Bettridge, chief executive, said in a statement.

With a month to go before its first sailing, the company says that’s all that will change on its “sexy, stylish” black ships called simply A and B. Each features a rooftop lounge, silent discos, DJs and overnights in popular cities such as Paris and Amsterdam.

“Some of the most adventurous travelers I’ve met on ships have been 50-plus,” Teresa Machan, cruise editor for London’s Telegraph newspaper, said in a story. “[W]ho’s to say they don’t appreciate hip décor, a laid-back vibe or want to eat avocados for breakfast?”

The line’s Rolling on the Rhine is set to sail April 14 from Amsterdam to Frankfurt, Germany, stopping in five ports along the way. Prices for the eight-day itinerary have dropped 20%, according to the website, starting at $1,519 per person, based on double occupancy.

Excursions (covered in the cruise cost) include an after-hours tour of Amsterdam, a cheese-tasting excursion, and a bicycle tour of Cologne.

Future cruises feature itineraries on the Seine and Danube rivers.
