California: Surfboards turned into works of art in Morro Bay
More than 20 surfboards-turned-artworks are on display around Morro Bay, Calif., in the town’s first such public art on display through November. The Surfboard Art Festival features boards that have been painted to convey familiar scenes in the Central Coast town, wildlife and even strands of kelp.
Local artists and even a fourth-grade class contributed to the surfboards sprinkled around the town.
The rules fare simple: “Surfboard art can be a painting that’s created using a re-purposed surfboard as the canvas or it can be a sculpture that uses a surfboard as the substrate material,” Morro Bay in Bloom, the festival’s sponsoring organization, says on its website.
Visitors will find the surfboards displayed at the Morro Bay Art Center, the visitors center and restaurants and stores around town too. Download a map that lists each surfboard site.
The surfboards will remain on display through Nov. 28, and yes, you can take one home, if you bid on it.
On Nov. 29, the Surfboard Art Gala Auction Benefit from 2 to 5 p.m. at Fish Bonez Restaurant will sell off pieces to the highest bidder. Tickets are $75 for VIP auction preview, $50 for auction only. The money raised goes to help Morro Bay in Bloom, which works on beautification projects in the community.
