Wyoming: Jackson Hole ranch highlights bighorn sheep migration
Wildlife fans can get a first-hand look at the fall bighorn sheep migration in Grand Teton National Park while staying in style at Spring Creek Ranch in Jackson Hole, Wyo. The mountain resort offers guests an opportunity to watch North America’s largest wintering bighorn sheep herd on the move from high mountains to lower-elevation meadows in November.
As part of the package, a naturalist takes visitors on a daylong tour tracking Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in the park. “These sheep have the latest rut season of any ungulate, and the males ram their horns together in dramatic displays,” a tour description says.
The tour also showcases ancient petroglyphs in the cliffs along the migration path. They were made by Sheepeaters, a band of Native Americans from the Shoshone tribe. A second day is spent on a tour to look for other wildlife like elk, mule deer, eagles and other birds of prey and moose.
The tamer side of the package includes daily breakfast and a few three-course meals at the ranch’s Granary restaurant.
The Bighorn Sheep and the Pathways of Migration package is offered Nov. 13 to 16, 20 to 23 and 27 to 30. Cost is $999 per person, based on double occupancy, or $1,323 for solo travelers.
