As mountains go, Alaskas Mt. McKinley is notoriously shy. At Denali National Park, rangers say North Americas biggest peak is visible only about 20% of the time. That makes John Johnsons crisp vacation photo all the more amazing. The conditions were extraordinary, says Johnson, who took this shot Aug. 4 during a long-planned Alaska trip with his wife, Cheryl. All of the park rangers were talking about the conditions and encouraging the visitors to go deeper into the park because of them. Cheryl suggested using the flag in the shot, which was taken with a Nikon D80 and a Tamron 28-300mm lens.
