Science, technology, engineering, and math will be under the microscope during Girl Scouts San Diego’s STEM-themed fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 14. Honorary co-chairs for Urban Campout: Mad About Science are EA Stewart of Del Mar and her mother Barbara Groce, a longtime Girl Scout volunteer. Del Mar resident Rita Lewis is serving on the event committee.

The event will be held from 6-11 p.m.,under the stars at Girl Scout headquarters in Balboa Park (1231 Upas Street). Proceeds will help support programs focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), leadership, life skills, outdoor adventure, and entrepreneurship. Tange Gavin is co-chairing the event committee with Sharp Health Plan Vice President/CFO Rita Datko, a member of the Girl Scouts San Diego Board of Directors.

Guests will arrive in everything from lab coats, safety goggles, and pocket protectors to cocktail dresses and TGIF-casual attire. They will savor gourmet food, conduct “lab” experiments, scan the night skies with telescopes provided by the San Diego Astronomy Association, generate kinetic energy by dancing to the music of The Heroes, and create endothermic reactions while toasting marshmallows for s’mores.

Auction items will include a seven-day cruise on Holland America Line, VIP passes to Dancing with the Stars, and Southwest Airlines tickets for foreign or domestic travel.

Urban Campout underwriters include Silver Sponsors Barbara and David Groce, Qualcomm and Southwest Airlines; Bronze Sponsor SDG&E; and Friendship Circle Sponsors Cox Communications, Mission Federal Credit Union, The San Diego Foundation, Sharp Health Plan, Sycuan and Wells Fargo.
