Share

Get your Elon Musk on and commute between San Diego and Orange County or Los Angeles in a chauffeur-driven luxury Tesla — and do it through April with a 30 percent discount offered exclusively to Travel Deals readers. Tesloop is a new service that offers city-to-city shared-car transportation in all-electric Teslas. Onboard amenities include free Wi-Fi, use of device chargers, noise-canceling headphones, comfy neck pillows, plus healthy snacks and drinks. There are multiple pickup/drop-off locations in all three counties. Avoid the hassles and expense of flying from Lindbergh Field to LAX by riding in style in a Tesla. Or why not discover the arts, culture and shopping opportunities in Costa Mesa? (Find lodging deals here: www.travelcostamesa.com/hotel-specials-and-discounts.) Tesloop fares are per seat, with four seats available per car; rates vary based on pickup and drop-off locations, as well as timing. When we checked last month, regular one-way express fares from Old Town to LAX were running $74 per person; one-way fares linking downtown San Diego with downtown Costa Mesa were starting at $59. Go to https://www.Tesloop.com to check out the service. To get your 30 percent discount (available one time, one way) use the code SDUT30.

Southwest Airlines is launching nonstop service on March 10 linking Lindbergh Field to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. At least for now, flights will operate Saturdays and Sundays only. A good reason to get packing: The all-inclusive oceanfront Occidental Nuevo Vallarta has slashed rates by 30 percent. Through April, couples can stay for as little as $202 per night — with all meals, drinks, mini-bar treats and most activities included. Starting in May, as temps begin to sizzle, rates drop even more: Through August, rooms for two start at $183, and it’s still all-inclusive. Even taxes are included in these prices. The 274-room resort includes five restaurants, two pools, a fitness center, plus tennis, basketball and volleyball courts. There’s no resort fee, valet parking is free, but in-room Wi-Fi costs $45 per week. Check out the resort and book online at www.barcelo.com/en-us/hotels/mexico/riviera-nayarit-nuevo-vallarta/occidental-nuevo-vallarta. The resort is about 25 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport — a $25 cab ride.

The romantic Albion River Inn on the Mendocino Coast is offering 30 percent off guest rooms, Sunday through Thursday nights through April. It means rooms for two, including made-to-order breakfast for two, are now available for as little as $136.50 per weeknight. The inn’s premier oceanfront cottages are going for about $250 per weeknight. Wi-Fi, and parking is free at the inn, and there’s no resort free. Guest room amenities include snuggly bathrobes, wine, coffee and tea — but no TVs. Book online at albionriverinn.com.

If you’re planning on going abroad this year and don’t already have a passport, get yours this month. On April 2, U.S. passport fees are going up $10. Adult passports will cost $145; kids under 16 will pay $115. Passport Cards, which are valid for border crossings and travel by sea to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean but are not valid for international air travel, will increase to $65 for adults and $50 for those under 16. The State Department says the $10 price hike is a bump in its “execution” fee and is aimed at better covering its costs for processing passport applications. The price hike will not apply to the $110 fee for renewing adult passports by mail. (Mail renewals are not allowed for those under 16.) Learn more at travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports.html.
