Petro Vlahos: The obituary of special-effects pioneer Petro Vlahos in the Feb. 20 LATExtra section said that his “color-difference system” was used for the chariot race in the film “Ben-Hur.” Vlahos’ system was used to help create the 1959 movie’s sea battle and its aftermath, not the chariot scenes. The obituary also said that Vlahos returned to film research in 1968 as chief scientist of the Motion Picture Research Center that was operated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The center was run by the Assn. of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
