Man suspected in woman’s death takes own life on highway
A man suspected of fatally shooting a woman took his own life hours later Wednesday on a California highway after his car was stopped by law enforcement officers.
The woman’s body was found in the driver’s seat of a vehicle parked in a Lincoln home’s garage, Lincoln Police Chief Doug Lee told Sacramento television station KCRA.
A witness told police he saw a man fleeing the home in a white car, Lee said.
The victim and the gunman possibly knew each other, Lee said. Neither has been identified.
The Lincoln Police Department said in a news release that the department’s investigators, along with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office and the Placer County district attorney’s office, identified a possible suspect and his vehicle was found on eastbound Interstate 80 in Placer County.
Officers eventually stopped the vehicle near Truckee using spike strips. When they approached it, they found the driver with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The California Highway Patrol said the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Truckee were closed for a brief period as police investigated.
The suspect’s identity will be released by officials in Nevada County, where the death occurred, Lincoln police said.
