Year in review: Notable anniversaries of 2013

Sen. Robert F. Kennedy of New York was fatally shot June 5, 1968, in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. He had been celebrating his victory in the California presidential primary; he was a leading candidate in the 1968 race. Assassinations, openings, debuts, repeals -- 2013 was a year of significant anniversaries in politics, architecture, the arts and more in the U.S. Here in Los Angeles, we marked 100 years since the opening of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the 50th anniversary of the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood, the 25th anniversary of the groundbreaking rap album “Straight Outta Compton” by N.W.A and the 10th anniversary of the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall downtown.

50th anniversary of the Vincent Thomas Bridge

On Nov. 15, 1963, the Vincent Thomas Bridge replaced ferry service between San Pedro and Terminal Island, a big change to L.A.’s port area. Above, the bridge, named after a California assemblyman, is seen lighted in blue in January 2005.

50th anniversary of the opening of the Cinerama Dome

The world’s first all-concrete geodesic dome celebrated its 50th anniversary this year with a series of screenings, including “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Logan’s Run.” The Times’ Mark Olsen reported that the Welton Becket and Associates-designed structure has 316 interlocking panels and a 32-foot tall, 86-foot wide screen. Above is a scene from 1986, when the Cinerama Dome hosted the premiere of “Star Trek IV.”

10th anniversary of the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall

Frank Gehry’s gleaming building opened in fall 2003 at the corner of 2nd Street and Grand Avenue in downtown L.A. Above, a gala on Sept. 30 celebrating the anniversary.
