Precautions

Residents returning to their homes after the fires are urged to use caution when cleaning ash and debris.

Fire debris may include sharp edges, nails or other objects capable of causing injuries. When going through fire debris, wear sturdy shoes, long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Leather work gloves and eye protection are also recommended.

Fire ash may be irritating to the eyes and skin. If the ash is inhaled, it can be irritating to the nose and throat and may cause coughing.

Exposure to ash in the air could trigger asthmatic attacks in people who have asthma. In order to avoid possible health problems, the following precautions are recommended:

• If ash gets on your skin, wash it off as soon as possible.
• Avoid getting ash into the air as much as possible. Do not use leaf blowers or take other actions that will put ash into the air.
• Wear eye protection, such as goggles.
• A dust mask can significantly reduce, but not eliminate, the amount of particles inhaled. A mask rated N-95 or P-100 will be more effective than simpler dust or surgical masks in blocking particles from ash.
• People with heart or lung disease should consult their physicians before using a mask during post-fire cleanup.
• Gentle sweeping of indoor and outdoor hard surfaces followed by wet mopping is the best procedure in most cases.
• If you have a vegetable garden or fruit trees, wash the fruit or vegetables thoroughly before eating them.

Warning about spoiled food:

Power was off in many areas long enough for food to spoil. Since power was restored, items have had time to refreeze. Officials warn that these food items are a potential health hazard.

Road closures:

• Northbound Plano Trabuco Road north of Robinson Ranch Road
• Santiago Canyon Road south of the 241 toll road to Live Oak Canyon Road

• Canyon areas off Santiago Canyon Road between Silverado Canyon Road and Live Oak Canyon Road, including the Santiago Estates area and Jackson Ranch Road
• Areas along Live Oak Canyon Road through the Trabuco Canyon area, including O’Neill Regional Park to Trabuco Creek Road

San Bernardino County

Most but not all San Bernardino Mountain communities affected by the wildfires reopened to residents Sunday. Mandatory evacuation orders were lifted for most of Lake Arrowhead and the communities of Twin Peaks, Rim Forest, Blue Jay, Agua Fria, Deer Lodge Park, Sky Forest and Cedar Glen. Reentry passes will not be required. However, a mandatory evacuation order remains in effect for areas of Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs, Arrow Bear and Green Valley Lake that suffered extensive damage.

Road closures:

• California 330 from Highland to Running Springs
• California 18 from Kuffel Canyon to Big Bear Dam
• Some local roads in fire-damaged areas of Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs, Arrow Bear and Green Valley Lake are closed to traffic.
• California 18 and 138 have reopened where mandatory evacuation orders have been lifted.

Ventura County

Road closures:

• C Street between Old Telegraph Road and Meadowlark Drive in Fillmore to accommodate firefighting equipment

National forests

All four national forests in Southern California -- Angeles, Cleveland, Los Padres and San Bernardino -- remain closed to the public until the extreme fire conditions subside.

The closures apply to all national forest recreational facilities, roads and hiking trails. Violators are subject to fines, arrest or both.

Some county roads and state highways, including Angeles Crest Highway, will remain open to traffic. But drivers are urged to use extreme caution and be aware of fire activity in the area. Individuals or organizations with special-use permits for sanctioned activities are exempt from the order.

In the San Bernardino National Forest, access is still allowed to the Serrano Campground, Alpine Pedal Path and Juniper Point parking area. Visitors must remain vigilant and obey fire restrictions, including no smoking and no wood or charcoal fires anywhere in the forest.
