Petunia the rhino calf gains weight, joins rest of family

Share

Good news from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park: Petunia is gaining weight.

The greater one-horned rhino was a bit underweight at 128 pounds when she born Aug. 1. The average weight for newborns of that species is between 132 and 176 pounds.

A 24-hour watch was put on the female calf.

Now, Petunia has gained about 90 pounds and is strong enough to leave her protected yard and meet the rest of the family, although she likes to stay close to her mother, Tanaya.

Their first visit to the 40-acre Asian Plains exhibit included a mud bath and a dip in the pond.
