Westbound lanes reopen after fatal accident on 10 Freeway
Westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway in Pomona were opened Monday night, but eastbound lanes were still shut down after a fiery explosion involving a big rig and four vehicles that left one person dead and 10 injured.
The eastbound lanes were expected to remain closed until early Tuesday as investigators try to piece together the chain of events that led to the crash near Towne Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said.
Four of the victims were listed in critical condition. Victims were taken by two helicopters to local hospitals, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
The big rig was loaded with furniture and spilled about 100 gallons of diesel fuel on the busy east-west freeway.
One of the cars was trapped under the big rig and exploded in flames, the CHP said. Flames could be seen shooting out the back of the big rig, according to television news footage.
One witness told The Times the truck was on the right side of the road, burning, and occasionally an explosion could be heard.”
