An 8-year-old girl struck by a school bus in San Jacinto is being treated for major injuries to her head and foot, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Los Rosas and Da Vinci drives Tuesday at 3:25 p.m. The bus, carrying 15 students from Park Hill Elementary School, was heading north on La Rosas at about 20 mph when the girl unexpectedly darted into the street, according to a press release issued by the CHP.

The left front of the bus hit the girl, and she was thrown under bus. The left front tires rolled over her right foot, CHP spokesman Darren Meyer said. The bus driver, Cindi Allen of Hemet, saw the girl from the corner of her eye right just as the accident happened, Meyer said. Allen was able to stop the bus before the rear tires rolled over the child.

The girl was transported to Riverside County Regional Medical Center, where she is being treated for a serious head injury and a fractured foot.

“The doctors described her injuries as non-life-threatening, though they are significant,” Meyer said. “They are worried she might lose her foot.”

Neither the driver nor the students on the school bus were injured. The accident is being investigated by the CHP.
