Inmate who escaped from Acton fire camp arrested in Anaheim
A minimum-security prisoner who escaped from a fire camp that houses some inmates who help battle brush fires across the state was taken back into custody after about 19 hours on the lam.
Miguel Velasquez, 22, escaped from the Acton Conservation Camp in Los Angeles County and was last seen Thursday just before midnight, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
It was unclear how Velasquez escaped. Authorities said only that he “walked away.”
At about 7:25 p.m. on Friday, he was arrested in Anaheim without incident, officials said.
Velasquez is serving a sentence for vandalism and criminal gang activity. Before his escape, he was due to be released in March 2016. It’s unclear how the escape attempt will affect his sentence.
The camp, which is in the Angeles National Forest near Acton, houses about 90 minimum-security inmates.
