The SUV listed in a statewide Amber Alert issued Wednesday for a Bay Area baby allegedly abducted by his father may have been spotted in San Diego, authorities said.

Authorities believe 22-year-old Mesut Guler, of Sunnyvale, abducted his 2-week-old Henry Guler-Romero late Tuesday night after an argument with the baby’s mother, with whom he was living.

Shortly after 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert for the infant, who authorities said was believed to be with Guler in a tan, medium-sized 2004 GMC Envoy SUV with the license plate number 6HIL892.

The baby’s age was initially reported as one month.

Guler allegedly told the infant’s mother that he was leaving the state with the child after an argument Tuesday afternoon, according to Sunnyvale police. Guler “has made previous threats to harm himself and the baby,” police added in a statement.

Tuesday night, Sunnyvale police officials were able to “ping” Guler’s cellphone, which showed it as being in the San Diego area on the 805 Freeway between Balboa Avenue and California Highway 163, according to the CHP.

CHP Officer Robert Catano said there have since been two possible sightings of Guler’s SUV in the San Diego area. The first was reported at 2:08 a.m. in the Hillcrest neighborhood, the second was in National City at 3:27 a.m., Catano said.

There have been no reported sightings since then, he said.

Authorities urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of Guler or the baby to contact the Sunnyvale Police Department at (408) 730-7110 or to call 911.

Amber Alerts are mass public notifications issued when authorities believe a child has been abducted and is facing grave danger.
