Police union manager who stole $360,000 gets 4 years in prison
The office manager for a police union in Anaheim was sentenced Friday to four years in state prison for embezzling more than $360,000 by using a typewriter to change the amount on her paychecks.
Cindy Ann Su’a of Whittier was the only paid employee of the Anaheim Police Assn. and was supposed to earn an annual salary of about $65,000. She was responsible for writing checks, tracking company credit cards and bookkeeping.
In 2007, she began increasing her bi-weekly paycheck by thousands of dollars. For example, she changed $2,489 to $5,489 or $6,489, according to a written statement from the Orange County district attorney’s office.
She also used the union’s online bank accounts to pay her bills, the statement said.
Union officials only noticed the embezzlement when they received a notice from the IRS noting that Su’a had failed to pay her taxes. They saw that her income did not match up with the salary she was supposed to be receiving.
Su’a pleaded guilty in Orange County Superior Court to 117 felony counts of forgery, 23 counts of computer access fraud and two counts of willfully failing to file tax returns.
She was ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution, taxes and fines.
Her husband, John Su’a, also pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of failing to file tax returns and was sentenced to 150 days in jail and three years’ probation.
He will also have to pay $105,000 restitution to the state Franchise Tax Board.
