Woman charged with cruelty after animals found in urine-soaked home

A Lake Balboa woman was charged Friday with animal cruelty and neglect after more than 30 animals, including dogs, cats and pigs, were found in her urine-soaked two-bedroom home.

The Los Angeles city attorney’s office charged Corey Deborah Carnegie, 50, with one count of animal cruelty and three counts of animal neglect.

In July, Los Angeles Department of Animal Services officers found 32 dogs, five cats and two potbellied pigs in Carnegie’s home in the 6600 block of Louise Avenue in Lake Balboa. Many of the dogs appeared to have skin conditions, flea infestation and fecal matter matted in their paws and fur, officials said.

The home was unsanitary, with an overwhelming odor from urine and fecal matter, officers said.

The animals were removed from the property and taken into custody by Animal Services for veterinary care.

Carnegie’s arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 19 at the Van Nuys Superior Court. If convicted, she could face up to one year in jail and $20,000 in fines for each count of animal cruelty and six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for each count of animal neglect.

“Animal hoarding often results in abominable conditions that threaten the health and safety of animals and humans alike, as well as creating a nuisance in the neighborhood,” said City Attorney Mike Feuer. “My office takes protecting the welfare of animals extremely seriously.”

This is the second animal cruelty case filed by Feuer this week.

On Tuesday, the city attorney’s office filed three criminal counts of animal neglect again Georgeanne Leong, 54, connected to the keeping of 249 chickens, 21 ducks and four guinea pigs in her Sherman Oaks home.
