Border brush fire leaves pets and livestock in need of care

Share

The Border fire raging in San Diego County is keeping firefighters engaged as it continues to burn out of control in the rugged hills near the Mexican border, but it is also keeping animal rescuers busy.

Crews with the San Diego County Department of Animal Control, as well as the San Diego Humane Society, have been on the front lines where they are tending to animals and livestock left behind.

On Tuesday, the county posted a photo of a Rottweiler mix that was rescued after being found with all four paws burned.

The injured pooch  has received medical care and is on pain medication.

“If anyone knows who he belongs to, please let them know that he is safe and have them come to our animal care facility in Bonita to reclaim him,” says the posting on the agency’s Facebook page.

The menagerie that the county has picked up so far includes 22 chickens, seven dogs, one cat, two goats, a horse and a donkey.

On Tuesday, as the fire burned toward Lake Moreno Village, rescuers were scrambling to get to one property where 75 miniature donkeys were housed.

Photos of an emu seeking refuge from the fire went viral on Monday.
