Los Angeles police searched Friday for the drivers of two vehicles that struck a man in what they called a “gruesome” fatal hit-and-run near Atwater Village.

A man crossing Riverside Drive just south of Fletcher Drive about 10 p.m. Thursday was hit by two vehicles traveling south on Riverside, the Los Angeles Police Department said.

Police believe the man was lying on the street after being struck by the first vehicle when the second hit him and dragged his body a short distance, officials said.

Neither driver stopped to help the man or to identify themselves, police said. One of the vehicles may have been a black Hyundai or Kia sedan with damage on its left side, police said.

The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, had not yet been identified, said Officer Robert Palma of the LAPD’s Central Traffic Division. Police described him as a white man in his mid-40s wearing dark clothing.

Police have received several calls from witnesses and are following up with them, Palma said.

“We’re looking for any kind of information,” he said.
