A baby girl surrendered at a Torrance hospital became the second infant in 2014 to be left at a medical facility under Los Angeles County’s Safe Surrender program.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday, a day after the baby had been left at the hospital.

The newborn is the 115th baby to be delivered safely since the program started nearly 13 years ago.

On Jan. 4, a newborn girl became the first baby to be surrendered this year at a medical facility when she was dropped off at a Culver City hospital.

The safe surrender program was developed by Knabe and approved unanimously by the Board of Supervisors in 2001. The program allows someone to surrender an infant who is no more than 3 days old, as long as the infant shows no signs of abuse.
