Man held after shooting, stabbing at South L.A. baptism party
Police arrested a man on suspicion of murder on Sunday after a fight at a South Los Angeles baptism party left one man dead and three others injured.
Shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to an apartment building on 127th Street between Hoover Street and the 110 Freeway, where an argument escalated into a stabbing and shooting, according to police.
Police suspect the argument was gang-related.
The suspect is in his 20s and is believed to be a gang member, said Sgt. W. Lin of the LAPD’s Southeast Division.
The incident began, Lin said, when party guests showed up with two uninvited gang members. The gang members’ girlfriends got into a fight and “at some point, someone pulled a knife on someone.”
“After that stabbing, someone pulled out a gun, and fired into the crowd,” Lin said. Four victims were transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
One man, in his 20s, died of injuries from a gunshot wound, said LAPD Officer Rosario Herrera. Another man, in his late 20s, was in stable condition with a gunshot wound in his lower body.
A girl who is believed to be about 17 was grazed by a bullet and arrived at the hospital in stable condition. A young man around the same age was stabbed twice, Herrera said. He had a collapsed lung and was taken to the hospital in serious condition, police said.
