A gunman killed by police in Bel-Air early Sunday morning has been identified as 75-year-old Robert Bandler.
At 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Los Angeles police officers responded to a report of an assault on a utility worker at a home in the 1200 block of Stone Canyon Road, police said at a news conference.
When the officers arrived, they encountered a man with a gun. The officers shot and killed the man.
An investigation into the shooting was underway.
No officers were injured.
Sunday night, Los Angeles County coroner's investigator Kimberley Arnold identified the suspect as Bandler.
[Updated 9:39 p.m: Violent crime is very rare in Bel-Air, which has had only three reported violent crimes in the last six months, according to The Times' Crime L.A. database.
Since 2007, only three homicides have taken place within three miles of Sunday's incident, none of them in the Bel-Air neighborhood.]
