Big Sur wildfire fully contained, residents returning home
A devastating wildfire that burned more than 900 acres in Big Sur has been fully contained, fire officials said Sunday.
The Pfeiffer fire started last Monday and burned 917 acres, destroying 34 homes and four outbuildings, the U.S. Forest Service reported.
Full containment was declared Saturday but crews remained on scene to mop up Sunday.
Members of the close-knit Big Sur community came together to house and gather donations for those who fled the fire.
Residents of the Clear Ridge, Middle Ridge and Front Hill areas were allowed to return home Saturday.
Evacuations remained in effect for the Pfeiffer Ridge community — which saw the most damage — from Sycamore Road to Clear Ridge and from Highway 1 to the Pacific Ocean, officials said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
