High-speed boat collision injures 4, capsizes boat in Newport Beach

Share

A cigarette boat traveling at a high speed hit another boat at the Newport Harbor entrance Sunday, capsizing the other boat and injuring four people, a fire official told the Daily Pilot.

The 25-foot cigarette boat -- identifiable by its fast speeds and long, narrow design -- traveled over the other boat, which was either idle or moving slowly, at about 9:30 p.m., leaving four people with head, face, hip injuries and breathing problems, Newport Beach Fire Department Capt. Glenn White said.

The four patients were taken to either Saddleback Memorial Medical Center or Hoag Hospital.

One of the injured passengers was unconscious when rescued but later regained consciousness, White said.

Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department were interviewing the three men aboard the cigarette boat Sunday night.

The speed limit in the harbor is 5 knots, according to White.
