Sacramento-area police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with the April slaying of two elderly Davis residents.

The arrest was announced Monday after local and federal authorities served multiple search warrants. Authorities were seen at a home near where 87-year-old Oliver Northup, an attorney, and his wife, 76-year-old Claudia Maupin, were found dead.

Police say the 16-year-old Davis resident, who is not being identified because he is a minor, is the only suspect in the case.

The couple were found inside their home on April 14. Each had been stabbed multiple times, and investigators found signs of forced entry into their home.

Mary Northup, Oliver Northrup’s daughter, told the Sacramento Bee she still doesn’t understand why the teen allegedly killed her father. “I thought, ‘It’s a 16-year-old. It’s a kid. Why would a kid want to kill an 87-year-old father?’ ” she said. “My father would be the first to jump up to defend that kid. I’m sorry we’ve suffered for his poor judgment. But I’m also sorry for this young man who has ruined his life.”

Officers from the Davis Police Department, the FBI, the California Department of Justice, the Yolo County district attorney’s office, the West Sacramento Police Department and the Dixon Police Department helped served the warrants Monday.
