A 6-year-old boy was stabbed to death in South Los Angeles on Thursday morning, authorities said.

The incident was reported in the 1600 block of East 88th Street in the unincorporated Florence-Firestone neighborhood at about midnight. Authorities rushed to the home after receiving a 911 call about a person screaming, officials said.

The first deputies to arrive found a man believed to the boy’s father with blood on his clothes and detained him for questioning, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Trina Schrader.

Deputies were then directed to a trailer at the rear of the home, where they found the boy with multiple stab wounds but still alive, Schrader said.

Deputies performed CPR on the boy until paramedics arrived and rushed him to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, Schrader said.

There have been five homicides in Florence-Firestone in the last 12 months, but 10 within a mile of Thursday’s slaying, according to the L.A. Times Homicide Report database.
