Firefighters battle 3-acre brush fire in Whittier as winds blow
Firefighters are battling a three-acre brush fire burning uphill in Whittier while strong Santa Ana winds continue to batter parts of Los Angeles County.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department deployed 107 firefighters and water-dropping helicopters to combat flames burning east of Mar Vista Street and South Colima Road, Fire Inspector Randall Wright said.
Additional resources were called to battle the brush fire due to concerns of strong wind gusts, hot temperatures and dry vegetation, he said.
“These small fires can become large fires very fast,” Wright said.
The Fire Department received the first report of a grass fire at 10:17 a.m. and noticed it was burning quickly uphill, he said.
As of 11:20 a.m., the fire was 10% contained.
Firefighters are hoping the water-dropping helicopters squash the flames, which will reduce some heat and allow them to lay down hose lines around the fire, he said.
