Scattered showers are expected throughout the Southern California region Sunday and possibly thunderstorms, in what has turned out to be a surprisingly wet early August, according to forecasters.

Showers fell late Saturday throughout parts of Los Angeles and there is a 30% chance of showers throughout the area until about 11 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service.

A lightning strike from a thunderstorm in the Venice Beach area last weekend killed a 20-year-old man and injured several others, so officials have renewed warnings for people to seek shelter if thunder is near.

Highs will range from the mid- to upper-70s at the beaches to the mid-80s inland Sunday. Southwest winds could reach around 15 miles per hour this afternoon.

Besides the chance of rain, locals can expect a mostly cloudy Sunday with light winds and a high near 84 downtown. It will feel hotter, however, because of high humidity that will result in Florida-like conditions.

“As they like to say back East: It’s not the heat; it’s the humidity,” reported the “Forecast Discussion” from the weather service. “And that will be the case today. It will be one more of the “hot and humid days that L.A. has experienced.”

Showers complicated but did not cancel a Dodgers game Saturday night. The grounds crew prepared to pull in a tarp from beyond center field to cover playing areas, broadcasters reported. Instead, crew members scattered a special dirt compound in parts of the infield.

The weather also likely was a factor in several serious accidents over the weekend.

Storm totals in some mountain areas and in parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties surpassed half an inch.

Gradual clearing is expected to yield a mostly sunny Monday.
