Two people were killed and a third was airlifted to a hospital after a three-car crash on the 60 Freeway in Chino on Monday.

The crash – which occurred on the eastbound side of the Pomona Freeway east of Central Avenue – blocked half the freeway for hours as crews worked to extricate the victims and clear the roadway.

Officials said the wreck started when a white 1996 Ford F-150 pickup became disabled in the No. 2 lane at about 10:50 a.m.

Blocked behind the truck was a Lincoln MKZ luxury sedan, said California Highway Patrol officer Mariano Santiago Jr. Just after 11 a.m., a Kia Optima slammed into the rear of the Lincoln, which then crashed into the pickup truck, Santiago said.

The right front and right rear passengers in the Lincoln were killed and its driver seriously injured, Santiago said. The Lincoln’s driver was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center; his condition is unknown.

The extent of injuries suffered by the driver of the Kia were also unknown, Santiago said. The driver of the disabled pickup suffered a bruise to leg and was released at the scene.

The cause of the crash was under investigation Monday afternoon. Only two lanes were open hours after the crash.
