A man and wife suspected of attacking a 16-year-old Chino High School student with a hammer last week has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

The attack on Thursday occurred across the street from the high school.

Gregory Undra Richmond, 48, and his wife, Raina Renee Crawford, 40, were arrested by Chino police Thursday evening at an apartment complex across the street from the high school.

Crawford also faces a felony charge of being an accessory to the crime after she allegedly tried to hide her husband.

Michelle Van Der Linden, spokeswoman for the city of Chino, said Tuesday morning that she recently spoke with detectives and that “the motive is still under investigation.”

The student and suspects did not know each other, but some kind of verbal conflict escalated to a fight.

The boy was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition but has recovered enough to speak with investigators, Van Der Linden said.

Police responded to a call reporting the attack at about 1:17 p.m. Thursday. Chino High School and nearby Walnut Avenue Elementary were placed on lockdown while police searched for Richmond, who was arrested a few blocks from the school “within the hour.”

Crawford was arrested a few hours later at Richmond’s home.
