The California Highway Patrol officer hospitalized after a collision with a trash truck Friday in Chatsworth has worked with the department for five years, authorities said.

Shane Chase was en route to a call while traveling south on the curbside lane of Topanga Canyon Boulevard when the truck, traveling in the same direction in the outside lane, turned in front of him near Nordhoff Street, said LAPD Lt. Andrew Neiman.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating the collision.

Chase, who has been on motorcycle patrol for two years, was taken to a hospital, where he was surrounded by family members and personnel from the CHP’s West Valley office, said CHP Officer Ming Hsu.

His condition was downgraded from critical to serious.

Neiman said Chase was “conscious and breathing” after the 12:59 p.m. incident.
