A married couple who were both suffering from Alzheimer's disease died in a one-car crash in Desert Center on Tuesday, a day after they were reported missing, authorities said.
Jose Bracero, 73, and Consuelo Bracero, 75, were last seen leaving their home in Carson around 2:30 p.m. Monday and were reported missing a short time later, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The couple's car, a 1999 Ford Escort driven by Jose Bracero, veered off Interstate 10 east of the Coachella Valley and overturned around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.
Consuelo Bracero was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was transported by helicopter to JFK Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation, although it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor, accoding to the CHP. Neither victim was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
